 Rally Report

The ALMC Stages Rally 2014.

This year the ALMC Stages Rally moved its headquarters to the centre of County Meath and the historic town of Trim. The organising team were very excited about the stages they selected and the compact route on offer to competitors and they weren't disappointed with the response, a great entry of top UK and Irish crews was received.

Trim castle provided a magnificent back drop to the ceremonial start on Saturday night and a great chance for the locals and visitors to get up close to the crews and the fantastic mixture of cars on display. A lot of the conversation at rally HQ, the Castle Arch Hotel, centred around the weather conditions and if the sunshine would prevail throughout Sunday. The 3 stages of Bective Abbey, Galtrim and Rathcore would prove to be challenging stages in any conditions but beyond most predictions the weather turned out to be mixture of sunshine but with sporadic showers and even thunder and lightning. The changing conditions were to catch out a number of crews on the day.

Predictions also varied around which top ten crew could take the top honours. Current point’s leaders in the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, Steve Simpson & Patrick Walsh were coming to keep up the championship pressure on point’s front runners and nearest rivals John Stone, Darren Atkinson and Damien Cole, last year’s championship winner.  This year the rally line up included Simpson, Cole, Stone, Atkinson as well as Irish Tarmac Champion Gary Jennings, Graham Coffey, Alex Laffey, Hugh Hunter, Irish National Forestry Champion Michael O’Brien and Meirion Evans, son of 2012 winner Melvyn Evans. 2WD entries from Frank Kelly and Adrian Hetherington added to a great atmosphere on Sunday morning as the crews headed out to Stage 1 Bective Abbey in the sunshine.

Fastest out of the blocks was Hugh Hunter & Andy Marchbank 7 seconds faster than Steve Simpson and Gary Jennings. Damian Cole was 4 seconds a drift with Mick O'Brien only a 1 second behind him. Frank Kelly was also showing us his pace on the stage 2 seconds behind in 6th. A tight battle was unfolding as the crews moved on to Galtrim with Hunter fighting to try and open a gap and Jennings taking a lead now on Simpson. John Stone also started to find his pace and went into Stage 3 after an equal stage time to O'Brien. Stone had tried hard on the ALMC Stages over the years but finishing wasn't coming easy to him.

By first service in Trim we had a new rally leader in Gary Jennings. He had a blistering time in the Impreza S12B before the halt and was looking good to build on it on SS4. That was until Simpsons collision with a chicane led to the stage being cancelled and the battle moved on with 3rd now filled by John Stone in the Fabia WRC. O'Brien, Cole and Kelly were also holding firm, as was Kelly as the top 2wd. The rally sadly lost Adrian Hetherington in the 2WD category when he had to pull out with bale related damage on Stage 2.

Changeable weather conditions were starting to be a factor for the crews by the afternoon. Going into Stage 6, at Rathcore, Jennings was down to a 3 second margin on Hunter but 43 seconds behind was Stone. O'Brien, Cole and Kelly were within 14 seconds of 3rd place Stone and no one was prepared to shake loose. Peter Taylor, Alex Laffey and Merion Evans were all within 6 seconds of Kelly's time and the spectators could sense the last loop was going to be a maximum committment from all the top crews. On Stage 6 Jennings pulled in with an oil light that was going to be too risky to ignore, Taylor retired with a broken drive shaft that severed a brake line and Hunter was now pulling away from the pack with 50 seconds to spare on Stone.

Stage 8 saw us loosing Merion Evans to an off, he had climbed to 7th at this point and seemed on a mission to gain even more places. Hunter added 6 seconds to his lead and it was looking like it would be enough to secure his victory with one stage to go. Stone in 2nd had 7 Seconds over O'Brien with Cole 1 second adrift of him. Laffey put in great times too, in the immaculate Fiesta R5+, on Stages 7 and 8 to go ahead of Kelly and take 5th place going into Stage 9.

The last stage was going to need everything from Stone, O'Brien and Cole to get that 2nd or 3rd place spot. Hunter and Marchbank had to get to the finish in a decent time to ensure a victory. The last stage, Rathcore, proved to be the place for a spectator. Cole was to set fastest time over the 17km stage, 1 second faster than O'Brien but enough to secure 2nd place. Hunter was 10 seconds slower than Cole but he was well aware of the margin he could drop and still win. Stone had taken 4 seconds off his previous run on the stage but it wasn't enough against the charge of Cole and O'Brien and he finished 4th with class honours. Stone and Williamson were delighted all the same with a strong finish as ALMC was starting to look like a rally they couldn't seem to finish over the past four years. Cole and Edmondson's attack was enough to get second place and those valuable championship points. Forestry master Mick O'Brien with John O'Brien on notes had put in a great performance to secure 3rd place. Alex Laffey and Jack Morton were delighted with their solid performance on the day taking 5th and class honours.  Frank Kelly and Jackie Elliot were 6th fastest on Stage 1 and put in a fantastic effort to stay in that position until the end, taking the 2WD honours. Graham Coffey and Jenny Gaebler finished 7th overall, a great climb back from 14th after Stage 1 and 2.

Hugh Hunter and Andy Marchbank are the new ALMC Stages Rally 2014 champions with a 54 second winning margin. Joining  them in the celebrations, at the Castle Arch Hotel, were Junior category winners and local crew Brian Brady and Leonard Tuite. Top ladies prize winner was Cathy Sewart with Martin Haggett on the notes. Historic category winners were Christopher Lloyd and Frank Curtin in their MKII Escort.

ALMC Motor Club and Cusack Hotel Group would like to thank all those who assisted with the organisation and running of this great event, including all competing crews, marshals, stage residents, sponsors and spectators.

ALMC Stages Rally is the 4th counting round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship and the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship.

PRESS REPORT:

The ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally 2014.

The organisers of the ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally couldn’t have wished for a better entry list or weather conditions for the clubs inaugural forest rally set in the beautiful backdrop of Glendalough. A relatively late entry from Cork crew, Owen Murphy and James O’Brien added to the excitement in the build up to the rally and the duo weren’t to disappoint the hundreds of spectators that lined the Glenmalure and Aughavannagh stages. Leading the rally from start to finish Murphy and O’Brien, in their Mitsubishi Evo IX, had come with the firm intention of being the first names on the ALMC perpetual trophy and to add a back to back win, to the Moonraker Rally, in the Valvoline National Forest Rally Championship.

Number 1 seed, of the 62 starters, Desi Henry with navigator Liam Moynihan unfortunately didn’t have the day they anticipated with an off on stage 1 that ended their rally. The duo weren’t to be the only top contenders that wouldn’t see the finish over the 47 km’s of long and technically challenging stages. Top 4WD Seeds such as Pat O’Connell & Mark Wiley (only 2 seconds off the pace on stage 1), Andrew Purcell & Stephen Quinn and Brendan Cumiskey & Ronan O’Kane didn’t get to first service in Rathdrum with a variety of mechanical issues and battle scars. Cumiskey would have been particularly disappointed with his day as his Subaru Impreza S8 stalled at the start of Stage 1and then issues with his engine forced retirement. Still even with these top retirements there was a host of crews still capable of putting it up to Murphy & O’Brien and Monaghan’s Josh Moffett with Jason McKenna on the notes were to make sure the Cork men weren’t going to feel secure in victory at any point over the four stages. Enda McNulty & Paul Sheridan were also right up there in the hunt and as the day progressed the top 3 places were to remain in that order. Moffett & McKenna did scrub considerable time off on the 2nd loop of stages and McNulty took a fastest time on stage 3 but Murphy & O’Brien kept up enough pace and then put in a final stage time that was worthy of a second glance sealing the victory. Notable 4WD retirements on the day also included John Reid & Enda Shiels as well as Liam Regan & Gary Nolan.

The 2WD drive battles were also intense all throughout the classes. David Crossen &Pamela Irwin were to take 10th overall and were fastest 2WD taking class 5A honours. Michael Conlon & Ciaran McPhillips were next 2WD with 12th overall and Ollie Williams & Mark Bowens enjoying third fastest 2WD spot and 14th overall with class 5B honours.

Wicklow man Jason Roche with Mac Kierans on the notes was 14th overall and 3rd in class 5A.  Conor McCarthy with Dan Donovan on the notes took a start to finish win in the Junior category. Notable 2WD retirements included Trevor Culbert & Ray Fitzpatrick with break pipe issues on stage 4, the marshals on their junction noting the handshake and overhearing that “it was fun while it lasted”. The rally saw local Driver family crews of James, with Sean Brunton on notes and also Niamh & Aisling both retiring with mechanical failure.

ALMC were delighted to see club members Martin McKeown & Declan Ryan taking the Class 1 honours in their first forestry outing together.

Overall:

More details on Forest Rally as the countdown continues....
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 11 May 2014 21:58

The Countdown to the inaugural ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally continues, in less than a week the hills and valleys of Glendalough, Aughavannagh, Laragh and Rathdrum willbe the staging points for a very welcome return of forestry rallying to the county of Wicklow. It is almost a decade since a forestry rally ran in the county and the excitement and interest is building to the delight of the organising team and local enthusiasts. ALMC Motor Club last year celebrated its 50th year in existence and is delighted to be including a forest rally along side their regular ALMC Stages Rally run every July north of the capital.

We are also looking forward to a return to the Glendalough Hotel as a rally headquarters and the inclusion of Glendalough House in Annamoe for scrutiny on Saturday morning.

The return of forest rallying to Wicklow has sparked huge interest from forest rally regulars as well as new comers to the woods. Clerk of the Course, John Carroll, noted at last Thursday evenings press launch, that he is delighted that so many national and in particular local entries have been received including the Driver family, from Enniskerry, being well represented and also Jason Roche changing his Mark II to gravel spec for the day. John is also looking forward to the great mix of WRC, 4WD and 2WD machinery that will be on display.

The two stages (Glenmalure and the Murray Motorsports Aughavannagh Stage) are in excellent condition and will be a really enjoyable challenge for the approx. 50 to 60 crews on Saturday. The two stages will be run twice with service near the village of Rathdrum. All-in the stages will be 47km in length with a compact route offering great value for crews at 390 Euro for an entry.

Entries received include Antrim’s Desi and Niall Henry and Liam Regan, also top Monaghan names such as Josh Moffett, Michael Conlon and Michael Carbin. Daniel Cronin, Omagh’s Marty McKenna and Patrick Keenan coming from the US, are also expected as well as great forestry regulars in the Benskin’s, Allen Treacy, Gerard Lucey, Pat O’Connell and Damien McGauran.

John McCarthy and Mickey Joe Morrissey, in a Corolla WRC, was the last crew to lift a forest rally trophy in Wicklow in 2006 in a rally that saw top 20 finishers that included Peter McCullough, Owen Murphy, Patrick Keenan, Niall Driver, Paul Staunton, Daniel Barry, Seamus O’Connell and Emma McKinstry. Next Saturday evening that gap should be firmly closed with new holders of the 2014 ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally perpetual trophy.

Entries are still very welcome, particularly as this weekend gone was a very busy one in the motorsport calendar for some interested crews, for entries call Joe Downey on 086 254 4364, our club website, www.almc.ie, holds the entry form and it will continue to be updated with all the latest information on the rally and details required by competitors. Also the club Facebook page (ALMC Motor Club) and Twitter (@almcmotorclub) will carry regular updates and rally news. Rally programmes will be available in shops in the Laragh area on Friday, at rally H.Q and also in the service area in Rathdrum. Seeding of entries will take place on Wednesday evening and will be published shortly thereafter.

We look forward to welcoming competitors and spectators alike next weekend to the “Garden of Ireland”.

ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally is a counting round of the Valvoline Irish Forest Rally Championship and the Triton Showers South East Stages Rally Championship.

Countdown continues to ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally
Written by Administrator
Friday, 09 May 2014 13:27

189:52:00……the countdown continues to the inaugural ALMC Wicklow Forest Rally on Saturday May 17th with just over a week to go and the excitement is really starting to build.

Last night the press launch for the forestry rally took place at the Glendalough Hotel where Clerk of the Course, John Carroll, met with the sizeable group in attendance to tell them all about the upcoming rally and what can be expected by spectators and competitors alike. As well as local interest, a large number of ALMC club members were in attendance as well as local participants in the organising team. A few of the rally cars that will be seen on the day were also on display at the hotel. A special note of mention to Paul Staunton who has, in the words of the team members, put in a Trojan effort to ensure the Wicklow forests live up to the expectations of the rally competitors. The attendees were excited to hear that Paul will be lacing his boots and putting on his helmet as a "00" safety car for the rally and we look forward to seeing him in the woods. Wicklow men Jason Roche and Noel Driver also deserve special mention for their massive contribution to the organisation of the event. We are delighted that Jason, who has helped out the team with promoting the event, has put in his entry form for the rally. The organising team were delighted that the rally featured in the current edition of the Wicklow People newspaper and acknowledged the strong level of interest and support received from local businesses for the event. Local business supporting the rally will feature in the rally programme as well as entries and maps showing stage locations, service area and rally HQ. Programmes will be on sale on Friday next in shops in the Laragh area and at service in Rathdrum on Saturday next. Please support the event and local business by purchasing a programme (cost €5).

A press release from the launch will follow shortly and also details on some of the competitors you can expect to see in action at the rally. With a week to go it is great to see over 50 crews entered for the event with time still for anyone who still wants to submit an entry to do so. It’s also great to see so many local entries and newcomers to the forests for this rally. Pace note provider preparation runs have been complete and no doubt they are working furiously to get these ready to issue to competitors next week. The Stages have been described as challenging but in excellent condition and a lot of work has gone into any touch ups required over the past few weeks.

Chief Marshal, Brian Byrne, is as always looking to encourage more marshals to sign up for the rally and if you, your friends or even local club are interested in helping out then please give a call to 087-645 7887. It’s a great way to enjoy the action and learn about rallying.  Voluntary clubs cannot run these events without volunteers so please don’t be shy!

The organising team of the ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally are also delighted to welcome the support of Murray Motorsport as stage sponsor for our Aughavannah stage. Murray Motorsport have over 25 years of involvement in motorsport and supply everything needed by competitors and enthusiasts from karting to rallying and in between.  Murray Motorsport supply all the top brands and are based on the Greenhill’s road, Dublin 12 but ship nationally and worldwide through www.murraymotorsport.com. Please support our Aghavannagh stage sponsor for all your motorsport, motor bike, racewear, tuning and performance needs.

The ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally is a round of the Valvoline National Forest Rally Championship and the Triton Showers South East Stages Rally Championship and headquarters is the Glendalough Hotel, Co. Wicklow. It’s the only place to be  on Saturday May 17th.

Many congratulations to ALMC club members Eugene Meegan and navigator Sarah Whelan on their success at the Cartell.ie International Rally of Lakes in Killarney this weekend. The duo had a very rewarding weekend of 15 very busy and iconic stages climbing from 11th overall and 5th in class, very early on in the rally, to finishing in a fantastic 4th overall in the international event and winning class 4. The Mitsubishi Evo IX was also the second fastest group N car with top two spots taken by WRC machinery. A great result in what we all regard as a great rally. Well done!

"Driver's" Rally !
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 01 May 2014 22:31

ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally -hard to call this one anything but a “Driver’s” Rally.

Going back in time, longer than any of us can remember, it was common place for a surname to be based on one’s profession, the Bakers, Smiths, Carpenters, etc. can probably all safely assume the origin of their family name but in Wicklow, more specifically Enniskerry, we have the Driver family and origins aside there is no question that they all like to live up to their name.

When the ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally comes to the Glendalough area on May 17th, the first forestry rally in the county for almost a decade, we will have the opportunity, not only to witness some of the best rally cars and crews on the island at the height of competitive action but will also see the product of years of passion for motorsport with the wholesale participation of the men and women of the Driver family.

Events such as the ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally don’t just pop up and disappear with the rising and setting sun on the day, a rally takes months of planning, organising and promoting by a passionate body of voluntary motorsport enthusiasts out to share the enjoyment of their sport with the local community, competitors and fellow motorsport enthusiasts, who come from all over Ireland, for the spectacle. The build up to a rally can be intense because there is a lot of work to be done weeks in advance as well as on the day and everyone is relying on the team to deliver a top class enjoyable event for all involved. Carrying off a successful event requires almost flawless execution of the rally plans and a huge level of coordination and experience all combined to make it work on the day. It takes serious passion and time commitment to organize and run these events in a safe and enjoyable way and central to the success of any rally is the drive of the volunteers that participate to build up the show and the enthusiasm of the competitors that come and set it all alight for the spectators on the day.

It should come as no surprise then if you have been involved in motorsport for a good number of years that somehow you have probably played your part in different ways to help organise, run and maybe even compete in events and if you have stuck around the sport for long enough then it has probably spread into the wider family and become a way of life for all so to speak.

On May 17th the Driver family will be out in force, in their locality, demonstrating the results of a lifelong passion for motorsport and in doing so will be playing their part as volunteers and competitors to contribute to the ongoing tradition of rallying on this island. Stage Commander Noel Driver will be overseeing activities on the day with the initial release of a “00” Safety Car driven by Pat Driver partnered by his son Paul, shortly after the duo clear the stages for competitive action you can expect to see Niamh Driver and her cousin Aisling in their Suzuki Swift out to make an impression on the class 1 results. James Driver will be out in his Ford Ka and will be aiming to make sure a bit of competition exists amongst the family in the same class. Other family members in the hot seat will be Fergal Driver in his Ford Escort as well as Paul’s identical twin brother Barry in his Nissan Sunny 4WD with cousin Derek reading the pace notes. If that wasn’t enough of an involvement, Paul’s wife Fiona will be there to help keep the whole event running like clockwork with a few more of the Driver family planning to wave them all on from the ditches of the Glendalough and Aughavannagh stages.

A big thanks to the Driver family and best wishes to those who are competing from all the ALMC Motor Club organising team. Keep her lit!

17 days until the first ALMC Wicklow Forestry Rally and entries are building up nicely from both forestry regulars and new comers to the woods. We have a good local contingent competing and on the rally organising team (more details to follow on this) and worth noting that ALMC Wicklow takes place entirely on a Saturday. Details of programme outlets will be published on the week before the rally but they will be easily available for anyone on approach to the Glendalough area.

If you haven't had the opportunity to see a forestry rally then tune into TG4 @ 23:30 tomorrow night ( Wed, Motorsport Ireland) for the previous round of the Valvoline National Forestry Championship - the Moonraker Rally which by all accounts was a fantastic rally for competitors and spectators alike!

Get your entry in to avoid disappointment !

Laharna Lanes Rally

Larne Motor Club Lanes Rally

Once again, the Skoda Felicia crew of Noel Devlin / Deirdre Gallagher headed north of the border on the Bank Holiday weekend to compete on the Laharna Lanes Rally hosted by Larne Motor Club, based at Ballygally on the Antrim coastline.Noel & Deirdre were the only ALMC crew taking part , while two other crews from TDC also made the journey up at the weekend.

The 100 mile route covered 21 tests -although one was cancelled on the final loop because the stormy weather made the ground impassable after 35 cars tackled it on the 1st & 2nd loop. These Lanes tests are generally shorter than our Endurance Selectives, their “pace” requires a few more BHP!!!

Noel & Deirdre finished 3rd in Class ( Novices !) and 28th O/A. The event was dominated by the Woodside Family, with Robert Woodside Jr & Sue Graham taking the top award in their MX5.

Birr Endurance Tests the Mighty ALMC Enduro Crews
Written by Club PRO
Monday, 21 October 2013 16:02

Last weekend saw the first time running of the Birr Motor Club Endurance Trial, a new event to the Endurance Trial calendar. There were a number of ALMC crews taking part in the event with the all club crew of Ian Downey and William Kelly seeded at number one for the event and leading the crews off the start on Saturday morning. The club pairing in their now familiar Toyota Starlet were confident heading into the event following their overall winner on the clubs recent Autumn event. Their event dominance was not to be they hit a tree less than half a kilometre into first test in sight of start line resulting in the test being stopped while the stricken Starlet was towed out of the test, minus its right hand corner including lights and missing bits of wing and front bumper. Following swift repairs resulting in some missed tests and taking maximums in the process, Ian and William set to climbing up the leader board while thinking about what might have been, they finished an eventual twelfth overall.

Former stages clerk of the course Noel Devlin with Deirdre Gallagher calling the instructions in their ex-works Skoda Felicia also took part setting some good times in the early tests. A high placing was scupper end when the Skoda lost all brakes on test 11 at the Kart track/forest, the rear brake pipe severed by a rock, Noel managed to make it back to the tea stop where Niall Driver (winner of the spirit of the event) made up a new braided pipe which was then fitted and the Skoda went on to finish the event 22nd overall and seventh in class one.

Club member Joe Downey was once again navigating for Patricia Denning in her Toyota Starlet the pairing found some of the tests tricky and emerged feeling they could have maybe placed higher in the overall standings, they finished first in class three and 17th overall. Andreas Reid and David English were also competing in class three, they had a good run through the tests and finished the event second in the class and 30th overall, well done to everyone who took part. With the cancellation of the Galway Endurance scheduled for November the Birr event was the last Endurance south of the border in this years calendar next up will be the ALMC Spring Endurance Trial which takes place in February of next year.

Downey & Kelly Second Overall on Monaghan Enduro
Written by Club PRO
Monday, 19 August 2013 20:47

ALMC’s Endurance regulars headed north for the Monaghan MC Endurance Trial which took place on Sunday. The all ALMC crew of Ian Downey and William Kelly who guided Brian Murphy to Endurance success earlier in the year took up the hot seat alongside Ian and with great effect the pair going on to finish just 26 seconds off the winners in second place. Meanwhile former stages COC Noel Devlin guided by former club member Deirdre Gallagher brought their Skoda Felicia home in 19th overall and 5th in Class one for Endurance cars. The next Endurance event in the calendar is our own ALMC Autumn event on the 21st September, COC Cathal Brady is promising a cracking event, more news to follow soon.

Ian Downey & William Kelly Accept their Award

Elsewhere there was disappointment for ALMC co-driver Sarah Whelan on the Cork Forestry rally where she recorded her first non- finish of the year when her driver Dave Dunn retired his Ford Escort MKII from the event following an off road moment that resulted in terminal damage ending their rally. Adrian Beattie in his Honda Civic finished the event 26th overall and a credible 5th in class 3 with Jonathan Carroll calling the notes, well done Adrian and hard luck Sarah we look forward to seeing you out on the stages again soon.

Another Competitive Battle on Round Five of UK Championship
Written by Club PRO
Friday, 16 August 2013 08:52

The REIS Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Championship witnessed another closely fought battle on last weekend's round five of the championship the Tyneside Stages Rally, with Damian Cole in his Ford Focus WRC a regular visitor to the clubs ALMC Stages rally taking overall honours just two seconds ahead of John Indri in the Darrian T90 GTR with Simon Mauger in the Ford Escort MKII third. Steve Simpson in his Subaru Impreza who had set the early pace went out of contention on the third stage leaving the scrap to Cole, Indri and Mauger. Peter Taylor brought his Focus WRC home in fourth overall with ALMC club member Robert Barrable in the Fiesta R5 rounding out the top 5 (see separate story). The 'Special Stage' TV coverage of the Tyneside stages will be broadcast on Motors TV on Friday 21st August at 21.00, with round seven of the championship moving to the Mewla stages taking place on 25th August.

ALMC Crew Impress on Stages
Written by Club PRO
Tuesday, 13 August 2013 20:11

The all ALMC club crew of Eugene Meegan and Sarah Whelan in their Mitsubishi Evo 9 continue to impress on the Irish stages finishing tenth overall on the recent Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally and taking 4th in Group N. The result follows their win in the Group N class on the Triton Showers ALMC Stages Rally back at the beginning of July this year where they finished a very credible 13th overall against stiff UK competition. Sarah has between events with Eugene continued to master her craft at reading the notes guiding Raymond Conlon in a Toyota Twin Cam to 7th overall and 3rd in class 13 on the Sligo Stages Rally which took place a week after her own club stages rally. Well done to both Eugene and Sarah and we look forward to watching their progress over the coming months.

Bird Wins the Triton Showers ALMC Stages Rally 2013
Written by Club PRO
Sunday, 07 July 2013 17:59

If there was ever a good example of every second counts then the 2013 Triton Showers ALMC Stages Rally is that with just one stage to go on the Meath based event during Ireland’s heat wave Paul Bird and co-driver Aled Davies in their Ford Focus WRC led Damian Cole in a similar car by just one second. Paul cranked the pace up a further notch to emerge six seconds ahead and secured the overall win and top points in the Get Connected REIS UK Asphalt Championship. “It has been a fantastic rally on great stages” commented Paul on arriving at the stage finish. Damian Cole with his regular co-driver James Morgan on the notes took second place overall in their Ford Focus following a hard fought battle all day with Bird. Damian ended the first loop of stages two seconds ahead only to be passed by the hard charging Impreza of Paul Bird on stage five; Cole stayed within a second through the following stages but never gained the lead again. Stephen Simpson and Patrick Walsh was the first of the Subaru Impreza’s across the line securing third place overall. Having posted some very quick times on the opening loop of stages and remaining close to the leading two drivers throughout the rally, there was always the chance of that all too often mistake but it was not to be. Welshman Hugh Hunter and Andy Marchbank in their Subaru Impreza WRC S11 finished just outside the top three forty nine seconds off the overall winner. Kenny McKinstry in one of the Triton Showers backed Subaru Impreza S14’s came home in fifth place overall, Kenny displaying speed in the new car although felt it was not reflected in his stage times.

Graham Coffey and Elliott Edmondson also visiting from the UK took sixth overall in a Subaru Impreza S12B having had a great run on the Meath based stages. Simon Mauger and Brain Cammack in their flying Ford Escort finished a credible seventh overall; their Escort was no match for the WRC machines on the very fast and dry tarmac stages. Simon was locked in a battle with the Ford Escort of local driver Trevor Mulligan and Declan Smith but despite his local knowledge Trevor could not find a match for Simon’s outright pace. Washington James and Paul Williams brought their sideways Darrian T90 GTR home a very credible ninth overall with rally sponsor and regular Irish National championship competitor Kevin Barrett rounding out the top ten in his new Subaru S14, the Dublin based driver is sure to find a lot more pace in the car when it is converted to right hand driver before his next outing. Group N honours on the ALMC event went to Eugene Meegan and co-driver Sarah Whelan in their Mitsubishi Evo 10, following a slow time on the opening stage of the rally Eugene found his grove on the following stages and remained well ahead of second place crew of Stephen Cullen and Seamus O’Grady in the Subaru Impreza, Stephen making only his second return to the competitive stages this year. Alex Laffey in his CA1 Sport prepared Ford Fiesta S2000 closed out the top three of the class. Gary and Breen McNamee won the juniors in their Honda Civic by just over three minutes from Sean and Brian Brady in the 205 GTi who were delighted to finish the event. John Reid and Eanna O'Siadhail won the historics in their Ford Escort by one minute and twenty eight seconds ahead of Dick Mauger and Steve McNulty also in a Ford Escort.
